Title Research: Se7en

Hey blog, it’s Kaz and the girls. For this opening sequence we chose the movie Seven also advertised as Se7en. The opening title sequence of this movie begins with a harsh, electronic type beat with an electric zapping sound playing while showing a close up shot of an open book with the background out of focus while a hand turns a page; this foreshadows intense events to follow. In quick flash the title “New Line Cinema Presents” in an all capitalized neon-sign type font appears. This image pops off the screen leaving a black background where the following title “An Arnold Kopelson Production” pops onto the screen backwards for a millisecond before popping off and back onto the screen in a proper, readable manner in a part capitalized neon sign font shadowed by a font resembling something carved by a knife that the name of the production company solely appears in. Next pops in another shaky shot of hands with broken-looking fingers and in comes the title “A film by David Fincher” in the same mixed-font/ different font the name appears in. Then different shots of moving metal type machinery come in before quickly leaving a black background where the name “Brad Pitt” appears in the knife-carved font flashing bold for a millisecond and flashing back to it normal state. The shot changes to a person using a razor blade to cut skin from their finger, then in pops the name “Morgan Freeman in the same font as before. It is first shown in the proper direction, then is pops backwards, then in the right direction once again, flashing. More shots of unrecognizable material comes in, then flashing to another black background where the movie title “Se7en” comes in with the capitalized Neon sign/shadowed backgrounƒd at first, then flashing in different fonts and at one point flashing much larger than when it came in-screen more to the center-right. The background changes as the font of this title change to a hand picking up something out of focus. Then a note books opens in the background of the name “Gwyneth Paltrow” in the knife carved font towards the bottom right of the screen flashing out and back onto the screen in between a shot of random words (shown for a fraction of a second). Now a background of a pen writing across lined paper comes in while the name “Richard Roundtree” pops on screen in the same font all names appear in. Then comes a series of different shots quickly appearing, then fading to a black background and on comes the name “R.Lee Ermey” in the same carved-font. Shot of tape being cut, and film being taped to a blank page in a book are shown and then cuts back to a black background as the names “Julie Araskog” and “Mark Boone Junior” pop onto the bottom of the screen, flickering. Next come more pictures and a hand-written page turning, again cutting to a black background when the name “John Cassini”, “Reginald E. Cathey” and “Peter Crombie” appear in the established carved font; shaking slightly on the screen and flickering, at one point momentarily enlarging. The screen then flashes to an unrecognizable shot immediately cutting to the black background where the name “Hawthorn James”, “ Michael Massee”, and “Leland Orser: come on screen in a painted-like font with small lines on the bottom off-center of the screen flashing and flickering. Shots of books pages, hand-written pages, and the opening turning page of the book are shown cutting to another black background yet again with the more names; “Richard Portnow”, “Richard Schiff”, “Pamala Tyson”, in the knife carved font and slightly off center screen, flickering to the bold paint-like font. Another typed book page come in, then a picture of a page with a line drawn across his face come into the screen as the title “Casting By Billy Hopkins, Suzanne Smith, and Kerry Borden” are shown in the hand-painted font, flashing momentarily bolder and flickering larger. Previous in between shots are shown as the title “Music By Hoard Shore” appears at the top of the screen in the original neon mixed carved fonts. In come more random shots flashing to a black screen with the title “Costumes Designed By Michael Kaplan” come in the same fonts as the previous title. Another quick random shot and in comes the title “Edited By Richard Francis-Bruce” on a black screen in the previous font (all title where slightly shaky in movement).  The next random shot has the title “Production Designed By Arthur Max” in again the same neon/carved font mix. Random shots are then shown jumping to another black background showing the title “Co-Producers Stephen Brown, Nana Greenwald, Sanford Panitch” flickering in the combo font. Back to more random shots in the background as the title “Co-Executive Producers Lynn Harris, Richard Saperstein” flickers in the combo font as the background fades to black. Random shots jump to another black background and the title “executive Producers Gianni Nunnari, Dan Kolsrud, Anne kopelsun”’ are shown, quickly cutting to a dark out of focus back ground with the title “Written By Andrew Kevin Walker”. More random shots flash on screen as the title of the movie is shown (so quickly is you blink you would miss it). The shot cuts to the expected black background with the title “Produced By Arnold Kopelson, Phyllis Caryle” in the still showing combo font. “Produced By” quickly flashes really large then jumping into more random shots. The music then ends with an electronic voice saying something and a black screen with “Directed By David Dincher” across the bottom in the continuous same font. Lastly different shots flash and the last thing that is a close-up of some building with the word “Monday” sown on the left side of the screen in a new drippy font.
